A self-tuning guitar:

http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/19462/?nlid=575

An idea who's time has come!

It is always good to hear of relatively simple uses of computers and electronics to get rid of mechanical-nightmares which bothered people for centuries.

Like dynamic keyboard labels, for example.

Anybody with more ideas?

AN APOLOGY

Some time ago I published here a great way to save money - learn the world-map by heart and never spend money again on guide books or  maps while travelling.

BEWARE!
World maps are inaccurate. This has costed me dearly!

In my previous post, I have recommended a piece of ancient DOS freeware software and a web-site which teach you the world map interactively, while having fun. And so, a few weeks later, knowing the map by heart (!!)  I made a costly bet: I claimed that the Ukraine is bigger than India. Yes. I was sure of winning as I remember precisely their contours on the world-map on the DOS-software screen.

Wrong! India is about 6 times b(i/u)gger. I lost the bet!! You don't want to know what I had to pay for this!!!

!

Scrutinizing the map afterwards, I noticed that other country sizes are also wrong - Kazakhstan, just for example, is way bigger than India on the map, while being smaller in actual reality.
The software also claims for no apparent reason that Greenland belongs to the Netherlands. This is a dirty lie!!
Greenland belongs to Denmark.

I decided to check the website I recommended - it turns out that although Zaire is for more than a decade now called "the democratic (read "communist") republic of Congo", the web site seems to supports the democrats by ignoring this and keeps calling this country by its old name.

Later I got a really nice present - a Belarussian world-map from 2006. It was hung on the wall, got lots of honour, was offered bread+salt, etc. After a careful check of this map - some facts:
1. Taiwan was never independant. Same color as China, marked "Taiwan island (China)".
2. It is actually written in the Map footprint (!!) something similar to: Israel has conquered the west bank and other Palestinian territories at 1967, where it leads a brutalizing and violent regime directed to annihilate the rightful population. The size of Israel on this map BTW is extremely flimsy.

Conclusions:
-------------------
1. Don't trust maps - show me at least one where Argentina is smaller than India, for example.
2. Beware of irresponsible advices of shadowy figures, and never, ever, trust anyone.
3. Don't use drugs.

I woke up today and tried to draw a map of Europe in my head. I decided that I'm quite good at it and I would like to take a test!

I entered the Internet and found these two useful resources:
http://www.funbrain.com/where/index.html
Here you can find a map quiz - the computer draws a map of an area in the world, highlights a country and asks you to name it. You can choose which area in the world you would like and which kinds of questions - multiple-choice, country names, capital names, etc.

After you decided that now you're really smart, download: http://www.simtel.net/product.php[id]55973[cid]132[SiteID]simtel.net
and do the complete test with a map of the whole world.
Good luck!

After learning all afternoon I can now say that I know the world map pretty well!
Now I always know where I am, where everybody else is and how to get from where I am to where they are. I need to buy maps no more!!

Next time - learning human physiology and how to save money on food.

I just narcissistically searched google for my family name. It says that there are "about 37,400" results.
Mine is first.

Found today an archive of Romanian Gypsy music and downloaded all of it.
Romica Puceanu is simply great - get her MP3's here: http://aris.ss.uci.edu/rgarfias/kiosk/romica.html

I also found this song extremely cute: http://media2.nacs.uci.edu/rgarfias/mp3/banat/asa-mi-zice-lumea-nsat-banatul.mp3

My PhD supervisor finally answered an email of mine after ignoring my emails for more than 2 weeks. I thought I might have offended him and he decided to excommunicate me, but no. He replied to an email of mine and everything is fine now.
In my email I asked whether I should send him anything.
His answer was: "NO!".

Going to Belarus in one week for 4 weeks, COOL!!
Really!

Must admit the reason for this post is that I wanted to use my new userpic.

Jobs I did and was paid for:

Bread-cardboard folder (At Angel bread - completely surrealistic experience. Not recommended for the weak at heart)
House cleaner (at my parents. not sure this counts)
Painting model (never agreed to be naked! They finally got me down to my shorts but that's it!)

Videogame room guide

Club musician (every week during 1.5 years in Xvost's club in Paris - usually got paid 5 Euros and free beer)
Concert musician (not classical concerts)
Street musician (very, very often. Really fun experience - I recommend it hotly to people who haven't tried)
Festival performer (oh, the money!)

Guitar teacher
Mandolin teacher
"Computer" Teacher
(Teaching matures with time. Every new student had stayed longer than the previous. I think I'm rather good now. Finally)

Commercial Software "Pirate" (Full details - only friends and relatives)
Computer-shop salesman
Web-master

Freelance programmer (since I'm 14. Beware non-business oriented people - The hardest part is getting finally paid!)
Software engineer

M.Sc./Ph.D. student (various scholarships - this counts?)
Exercise checker (at the Hebrew university)

PEOPLE - POST YOUR VARIOUS JOBS TOO... This is nostalgic, ain't it?

When my spirit is somewhat low,
I run,
to connect my body to my soul,
and pump some adrenalin into my spirit.

But running disengages me even further
my physical suffering disintegrates me,
now I'm back and there's almost no connection anymore.
My soul floats empty in the air,
my body floats empty in the chair,
I'm neither here nor there.

Shalom Haver.

I have visited a friend of mine who lives in the village. It is the one who told Kusturica everything he knows (a rather talkative village).

He filmed a video-clip of his guests without us knowing.

Now it was published for the masses.

View it at:

I always wanted to be a youth-idol. My dream is to walk on the street and suddenly have someone say - "Hey, I know you, I saw you on TV".
It takes time and the way there is long.
Some time ago I saw a guy in Tel-Aviv which I recognized as someone who performed on "Kursik". Being the altruistic guy that I am, I went to him and said "Hey, I remember you, you performed on Kursik!".
Now he has something to tell his grandchildren - "You know, little Jacob and Pziya, now I'm old and feeble, but I used to be very famous at my time. People would come to me on the street and..."

Perhaps it could be nice to form an "I saw you" club, where "musician" members register, there is a random poll, and each one has to go to someone from the list and "Hey, I know you" him (or her).

Fred Adra has published two videos from our TV performance. See it while it's hot at:
